Welcome back Roadrunners! I hope that all of you had a restful and family filled holiday break. We had a nice mix of out of town travel and home time. The sometimes lazy and inconsistent schedule is a good and bad thing, and I think many of us are looking forward to a normal routine.
Speaking of routine, we’ll start with our drop off and pick up procedures. Car drop off doors are open from 8:00 am to 8:20 am. Please arrive a few minutes before 8:20 am so that our staff can close the doors and get to their morning tasks. Changes in dismissal are best noted in writing through student folders. Phone calls by noon are the next best option. Emails to the office staff and a teacher are a good redundant choice, but we cannot promise they will be seen after midday. We prefer car line to office pickup. Unannounced office dismissals between 2:30 pm and 3:10 pm can cause classroom disruption, although we understand the occasional emergent change. Try to arrive between 3:00 pm and 3:10 pm for car pickup. We open the doors at 3:10 pm and are typically finished by 3:18 pm. Thanks for helping us with this topic as it relates to learning and safety for our children.
Monday is a Day 1. We will soon publish the next several months. I will send that out as will our teachers. For this week there is nothing special – Day 1 through 5.
On Monday at the end of the day, we will bring all of our Roadrunners together and kick off our Goochland Reads program. For several years we have handed every elementary student and staff member the same book to read and discuss. Throughout the month of January, we’ll let you know what to read at home. At school, we’ll have conversations and opportunities to show what kids know. This year our Superintendent, Dr. Raley, may stop students in the hallway with a question. Answer correctly and earn a prize! Please help your child participate! The division Spelling Bee is Wednesday night at 6 pm at the GHS auditorium. We wish Jackson Dau, Gavin Watson, and Steven Norris the best of luck! Report cards for the 2nd nine weeks will come home on Monday, January 13th.
A reminder about making sure your contact information is up to date for calls and texts on weather delays and closings. Those of you with a Powerschool account you can update your email, phone and text message preferences by following the directions under the “Family Connect, School Messenger” tab on our website. For families with younger students, you can call the school to check your information, or call and ask for a Powerschool Registration letter to set you up for the future. I’ve found the fastest delay or closing notification comes via text message and the county Twitter feed. But you must have the text message feature turned on in School Messenger. The county inclement weather weblink is also kept up to date.
One last mention is about the PTA Brunswick Stew Fundraisers. Thanks to your generosity all 50 quarts of stew were purchased at the Winter Concert. We then had almost 90 preorders placed for the January 24th future order date. Due to the success, we are extending the order date until Friday, January 10th. Here is the order form for Brunswick Stew! Here is the online link – it costs $11 to cover the credit card fee. Or print the form and send it with a check to pay $10.
