Remote Learning Day January 6, 2022

Prior to the winter holiday we communicated plans for the possibility of designating a weather-related closure as an “unscheduled remote learning day.” Yesterday afternoon, we made the decision that today, our third consecutive missed day, would be a traditional snow day with no expectations for student work because of the number of households in our community that have still not had power restored. As we plan for tomorrow, we will take advantage of the opportunity for a remote learning day, but will do so in a way that puts little to no stress on our families or staff.

Tomorrow, Thursday, January 6, will be a remote learning day. The only expectation is that students who are able, spend time reading tomorrow - or being read to, in the case of our youngest learners. This could include rereading a favorite book that a student has in the house, reading a magazine or any printed material in the house, reading a portion of an eBook available on an electronic device, etc. This activity ties directly to Virginia’s Standards of Learning, including vocabulary development, fluency, and reading comprehension.

Suggested Developmental Timeframe
Preschool-Grade 2, 10-20 minutes
Grades 3-5, 20-30 minutes
Grades 6-12, 30-60 minutes

For any students who are unable to participate for any reason, there will be absolutely no penalty upon our return to in-school instruction following the cleanup from the recent winter storm. Please keep in mind, our ability to designate a school closure day as a remote learning day provides the opportunity to minimize future calendar disruptions (i.e. makeup days) should we have continued weather-related disruptions over the next few months.

Two shelf-stable meals will be provided from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Byrd, Randolph, and Goochland High School.
